Star of Hope

Just got back from an Outreach at the Star of Hope Transitional Living Center. Ymelda Contreras (of the Smith Branch) and I visited a life skills class and had the opportunity to promote library services and sign the students up for library cards. In the hour we spent in the classroom, we signed 30 residents up for Power Cards!

SOH Transitional Living Center helps to prepare and train the homeless to become independent and re-enter the mainstream of society. The branch we visited today is comprised exclusively of single women, and women with children living at the facility with them. I can tell you that seeing how hard these women are working to gain the skills they need to support their families really puts things into perspective. Doing Outreaches such as this one is one of my favorite parts of the job. They really make me grateful to be a Public Librarian, and to have the opportunity to promote our services to people who can so greatly benefit from them.
